A rising star among young American conductors, Jonathon Heyward,
leads the Orchestra in Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9. Written in
1945 at the end of World War 2, this symphony was expected by the Soviet
authorities to be a loud and noisy public celebration; when the composer
created instead this lovely work of lightness, delicacy, charm and personal
